A 54-year-old man from Queens fatally stabbed his wife and 2-year-old daughter before turning the knife on himself, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the man used a kitchen knife to stab the 41-year-old woman and their young child multiple times in the neck and chest inside their home in Ridgewood. He then stabbed himself in the chest.
The woman was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The toddler, who was taken in critical condition to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, also died later that evening. The man was hospitalized at Elmhurst and remains in critical condition, officials confirmed.
Investigators recovered the knife at the scene.
Neighbours had expressed their shock over the tragedy. One neighbour said it was difficult to believe such violence could happen so close to home.
“It’s shocking, you know, that it happens right next door to you. I guess, you don’t know who your neighbors are,” the neighbour said according to New York Post.
Another resident, who lives next door to the family, said there were no signs of distress earlier in the day. In fact, they recalled hearing the man singing in the shower that morning, sounding as if it were a normal day.
“You don’t hear the fights, you don’t hear nothing,” the neighbor said, describing the atmosphere as eerily calm before the incident.
