In 2017, American actor Jason Momoa gave one of his "best performances" in Netflix's historical western series, which tells the story of the North American fur trade. Starring as Declan Harp, the drama transports viewers to the late 18th century, which began in the 1500s as an exchange between Native Americans and Europeans. As well as the trade, Frontier follows Declan, an outlaw who is campaigning to breach the Hudson's Bay Company's monopoly on the fur trade in his native land, which has become corrupt and engages in illegal activities to enrich itself.
The series left viewers captivated as Declan, who aims to make some money from the fur trade, devises an elaborate scheme to plunder Hudson's Bay and set a trap for his former ally, Lord Benton (played by Alun Armstrong). With three instalments, many fans have shared their desire for the show's return after it aired its final episode in 2018 and urged others to tune in.
Netflix also teases the brutal struggle for power in its synopsis, which reads: "In 18th-century North America, ruthless trappers and entrepreneurs fight to wrest control of the fur trade from the mighty Hudson's Bay Company."
Frontier has been branded "10/10" by impressed viewers who took to IMDb to share their thoughts about the western.
One praised: "I love it and I want more fast paced, believable and intriguing. I definitely want to see more. Most TV shows I lose interest in quickly. Frontier kept the story interesting and moving."
A second echoed: "Fabulous Fabulous Fabulous show. Jason and all the cast are perfect. Hope more seasons are coming! Really really need to see more of this show."
"Frontier is so much better than I expected. While it's not the best show I've ever seen, it's definitely one of the most underrated shows I've seen. Jason Momoa is absolutely fantastic here," said another.
It was also hailed a "Fantastic and Underrated" by another fan who added: "I can't believe it's been cancelled. I thoroughly enjoyed this series, and I thought the acting, writing, and directing were all on point. Sad to see that it won't continue."
Sadly for fans, Frontier was cancelled in 2019. and while Netflix did not issue an official statement, Popculture.com reported that Sokanon star Jessica Matten mentioned it during a podcast interview on Canadians Talking Sh** with Adam MacDonald.
Meanwhile, Momoa paid tribute to his character on Instagram, posting a video of himself listing some of the characters he's played. At the very end, he muttered, "Rest in peace, Declan."
