Metropolitan Police have opened an investigation after a Premier League footballer was allegedly threatened with a firearm on a busy London street. The incident reportedly took place as the player was walking with a friend, prompting police to be called at 11:14pm on September 6.
In the wake of the chilling episode, a football agent has been arrested and held in custody. According to The Sun, the agent is suspected of brandishing the firearm with the intention of inciting fear of violence. The representative, whose clientele includes an England international, is also under investigation for allegedly blackmailing and issuing threats against the friend of the footballer.
Despite the arrest, no charges have been filed against the agent. However, police did raid his Hertfordshire residence two days after the incident.
He was granted bail on September 9, with the stipulation that he refrain from contacting the player.
Further restrictions were imposed on the agent, including a prohibition on visiting the player's club training ground and travelling overseas. Nevertheless, a judge at the magistrates' court agreed to a variation in bail conditions.
The agent requested his passport for pre-planned trips out of the UK, but it is understood that he must surrender it to the police upon his return.
An insider told The Sun: "This was a terrifying incident and one which has sent shockwaves through the business side of football.
"The player was understandably shaken up - to have threats made against you with a gun is shocking.
"He reported it right away. It was the right thing to do for his safety. He has been supported by his friends and club and they all hope it will not impact his performances.
"But there will be serious questions about why this happened, which the police are now trying to answer."
