Manchester United suffered one of the greatest shock losses in English cup history as they fell to a 12-11 penalty shoot-out defeat against Grimsby Town on Wednesday night. Ruben Amorim's nightmare tenure went from bad to worse at Blundell Park as torrential rain and thunder and lightning suited the mood in the visitors' camp.
Charles Vernam opened the scoring before Tyrell Warren doubled the Mariners' lead in the first half, both profiting from poor Andre Onana goalkeeping. Bryan Mbeumo scored his first United goal from the bench before Harry Maguire headed the Premier League club level in the 89th minute.
Onana continued his failings in the shoot-out, saving one out of 12 Grimsby penalties. Matheus Cunha missed a penalty to win it 5-4 before Mbeumo hit the bar with the decisive spot-kick.

Man Utd player ratings vs GrimsbyAndre Onana: 0
Grimsby's Christy Pym deserves a United starting berth more than he does. Was beaten four times, but only two counted. Conceded 11 of 12 penalties, despite getting his hand to several of them. Should not play for the club ever again.
Tyler Fredricson: 2
Looked completely out of his depth before being hooked at half-time. Never seemed comfortable and picked up a booking for good measure.
Harry Maguire: 6
Won his aerial duels, as expected, but looked just as nervy as young centre-back partners Tyler Fredricson and Ayden Heaven in the first half. You can always rely on him for a clutch headed goal.
Ayden Heaven: 3
Made nine clearances as Grimsby battered United's goal. Lasted an hour. Missed a good headed chance in the second half.
Diogo Dalot: 2
What does Amorim see in him? Always a liability on the ball in his own half and seldom contributes to attacks across the halfway line.
Manuel Ugarte: 1
The thought of United willingly offloading Kobbie Mainoo because Amorim rates the Uruguayan more highly has understandably sickened supporters. Deservedly axed at the break.
Kobbie Mainoo: 6
Ironically one of the visitors' sharper performers, despite not playing a single minute in the two Premier League openers. Smooth on the ball, always direct, and assisted Bryan Mbeumo's goal.
Patrick Dorgu: 2
Atrocious crossing at times. Very little attacking threat, which starved Benjamin Sesko. One of the three half-time substitutes.
Amad: 1
Returned to his preferred attacking role after a difficult start to the season at right-wing-back, but could hardly get the ball under control.
Matheus Cunha: 1
Missed a penalty to win the shoot-out.
Benjamin Sesko: 1
His first start since a £74million transfer to United. Talk about a rough welcome... Unconvincing is an understatement. Clearly didn't fancy a penalty, either.
SubstitutesMatthijs de Ligt: 4
On at half-time. United were as under the cosh as in the first half, but he spent most of the second half in Grimsby's box. Missed an absolute sitter in the 95th minute.
Bruno Fernandes: 6
Injected United with desperately missing quality after the break. Expertly connected with Mainoo. Amorim must understand that that is his best midfield partnership before it's too late.
Bryan Mbeumo: 5
Breathed life into the visitors with a nicely taken first goal since his arrival from Brentford. But also missed the decisive penalty.
Mason Mount: 6
Continued his bright start to the season by providing a pinpoint corner for Maguire's equaliser.
Joshua Zirkzee: 6
First minutes of the season.
