Raipur: Tragedy befell Salik Ram Toppo, who was crushed to death by an elephant in Pathalgaon forest range, in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja division.
Thereafter, in a bizarre twist, an unusual dispute arose over government compensation.
Six women came forward, along their children, each asserting she was his spouse and rightful heir to the share of the compensation.
The unusual situation has become a topic of discussion not only in that village but also across the state and nation.
Salik Ram’s fellow villagers are perplexed by the turn of events as they knew he lived with one wife and son, Bhagwat Toppo. Many of them can’t believe the emergence of six wives, who have prepared Panchnama documents to stake their claim.
Some oldtimers, however, said that Salik had spent time with the other women, each having 2 to 3 children, and may have married them at different times.
The children and sons-in-law of Salik’s former wives have also approached authorities, demanding their share of compensation.
Acknowledging the complexity of the case, the Forest Department said that a thorough investigation will be conducted, with Panchayat consent and support.
The Forest Department also stated that the woman/women who present valid certificates proving their marriage to Salik Ram will receive the compensation.
