Crystal Palace have sensationally pulled the plug on Liverpool's move for Marc Guehi in a dramatic late twist on deadline day - despite a deal sheet being submitted that gave the clubs until 9pm to seal a deal.
The Premier League champions have been in talks to sign Guehi since last week and finally struck an agreement worth £35million for the highly-rated England star on Monday, when he also underwent his medical. But thedeal was put in jeopardy with the south Londoners encountering difficulties in their bid to replace Guehi.
The Eagles did confirm a move for Jaydee Canvot just before the deadline, though his arrival alone wasn't to replace Guehi. Palace's failure to get a loan deal for Brighton's Igor Julio over the line added pressure on Eagles chief Steve Parish, with head coach Oliver Glasner actively rallying against the move..
Palace have been dealing with a massive conundrum in that Glasner - who has led the club to FA Cup success and a major European competition for the first time in their history - has been opposed to selling his captain from the start. The Austrian values Guehi both as a player and a dressing room leader and has spoken out about his keenness to keep hold of the England centre-back.

His desire not to sell was further emboldened by the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal and further grew on deadline day with the club’s struggles to find a replacement he deems suitable for his skipper. Teenage French defender Canvot is joining from Toulouse in a £20m-plus move, but Glasner sees him as a project rather than an immediate starter.
Palace CEO Steve Parish has spoken about the club owing money on players who have arrived at Selhurst Park in recent years, and his belief that it would be financially irresponsible to NOT sell Guehi if their valuation was met - something Liverpool duly did.
Glasner had made it clear he would be upset if Guehi goes and there is no replacement he deems of sufficient quality. It's understood that at no point on Monday did they have one lined up that he believed could effectively, over the course of an entire Premier League season, replace his skipper - even when it looked like Igor might arrive.

Further complicating matters are the growing fears in south London that a move to Bayer Leverkusen could well be on the cards for Glasner after Erik ten Hag’s sacking earlier on Monday following just two Bundesliga games at the helm.
Glasner did tremendous work at Eintracht Frankfurt, winning the Europa League, and Leverkusen bosses are under big pressure to make a statement appointment that appeases supporters after making a big noise about the arrival of ex-Manchester United manager Ten Hag, before quickly realising he was an ill fit at the BayArena.
The Austrian fits the bill and an opportunity to join a Champions League club could be too much to say no to, particularly if Palace’s skipper was sold from under him.
Thus, Parish has elected to back his manager, showing how highly he rates him, and hoping that it persuades Glasner to ignore any interest from Germany - but sees his club miss out on a £35m windfall he believed they badly needed.
