Guwahati: A suspected Maoist who allegedly carried out the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast on a railway track in Kokrajhar in Assam was killed in an encounter.
Kokrajhar SP Pushpraj Singh said the encounter took place during an operation in Nadanguri. "Police received information that a few militants were hiding in the area. When police reached the spot, they opened fire. When we retaliated, they fled. Upon searching the place, we found one injured militant, who was taken to hospital. He was subsequently declared dead.”
He added that one pistol, two grenades, a voter card and an Aadhaar card were recovered from the encounter location. “The deceased has been identified as Apil Murmu alias Rohit Murmu (40), allegedly linked to multiple insurgent activities across Assam and Jharkhand.”
He added that a team from Jharkhand police came to Kokrajhar recently. Murmu was active since 2015 and moved between Assam and Jharkhand. He was involved in a train blast in Jharkhand in October 2024.
On October 23 railway services across Lower Assam and parts of north Bengal were disrupted, after unidentified miscreants detonated a suspected IED on a railway track in Kokrajhar district.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said, “This person as per our information was trying to create a new outfit in Assam. He had close links in Jharkhand.”
