A youth from Assam’s Cachar district has gone missing under mysterious circumstances after being slapped by a fellow passenger on board a Mumbai-Kolkata IndiGo flight, according to a report by The Times of India.
The incident, captured in a widely circulated video, shows the victim, identified as Hossain Ahmed Mazumdar, being escorted to his seat by flight attendants before a co-passenger hits him in what appears to be an unprovoked act.
Hossain, who worked at a gym in Mumbai, was travelling back home to Katigorah in Cachar. The video has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many users raising concerns over airline protocols, passenger safety, and the handling of individuals with possible mental health emergencies.
Eyewitnesses suggested that Hossain may have been experiencing a panic attack at the time of the incident, a possibility that has heightened concerns over his subsequent disappearance.
After landing in Kolkata, Hossain was scheduled to board a connecting flight to Silchar. However, he never arrived, and his family, who were waiting at Silchar airport, say they have received no official communication regarding his whereabouts. His mobile phone is reportedly still in Mumbai and has remained unreachable since the incident, according to the TOI report.
“When we didn’t find him on the Silchar flight, we contacted the local authorities and even went to Udharband police station near the Silchar airport. But we received no concrete information about his whereabouts,” said Zubairul Islam Mazumdar, a relative of the missing youth, as quoted by TOI.
His father, Abdul Mannan Mazumdar, who is currently battling cancer, voiced anguish over the sudden disappearance of his son. “He was working hard in Mumbai to support us and was returning home. I saw the video this morning and now I don’t know where my son is,” he said.
Responding to the incident, IndiGo said in a post on X (formerly Twitter): “We are aware of an incident involving a physical altercation on board one of our flights. Such unruly behaviour is completely unacceptable and we strongly condemn any actions that compromise the safety and dignity of our passengers and crew. Our crew acted in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures. The individual involved was identified as unruly and handed over to the security authorities upon arrival. All appropriate regulatory agencies have been duly informed, in line with protocol. We remain committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment on all our flights.”
However, it is to be noted that the airline’s statement did not clarify whether Hossain received any medical attention, counselling, or was taken into protective custody by the authorities following the incident.
