Winning the Miss Universe crown brought Harnaaz Sandhu global fame, but also unexpected criticism. Just a year after her win, the internet turned unkind, reportedly mocking her for weight gain. Trolls flooded her social media, ignoring the fact that real bodies change, especially when health issues are involved. But today, at 25, the beauty queen is turning heads once again, not for her look, but for her strength. Harnaaz is currently gearing up for the release of her Bollywood debut movie Baaghi 4 alongside Tiger Shroff. And, ever since the first poster and several looks from the film came out, fans have been going gaga over her as she has re-emerged looking fitter and stronger.
Harnaaz Sandhu opens up about trolling
What many didn't know at the time was that Harnaaz was silently battling celiac disease, an autoimmune condition that causes the body to react negatively to gluten. This disorder not only leads to digestive problems but can also trigger sudden weight gain, fatigue, and nutritional deficiencies if untreated.
Harnaaz revealed this in 2022, saying that her body couldn’t handle foods made from wheat, barley, and rye, making her weight fluctuate in ways she couldn’t control. Earlier, she told People Magazine, "The condition made her gain weight unexpectedly, drawing harsh criticism and online trolling. "I was bullied for gaining weight. It was uncomfortable and really surprising to see how people started having their opinions, which should not really matter."
Determined to take back control, as per the several reports, Harnaaz committed to a strict gluten-free diet. She eliminated all gluten-based products, swapping them for healthier, gut-friendly alternatives. This not only helped her manage her condition but also triggered a noticeable transformation in her physique.
The Miss Universe 2021 also shared a glimpse of her fitness comeback on Instagram with a reel captioned, “Back like I never left, darling.” The post quickly went viral, with fans praising her hard work and glow-up.
Harnaaz Sandhu's weight-loss journey
Her journey wasn’t just about food. Harnaaz incorporated a mix of cardio, strength training, yoga, and most importantly, Pilates into her daily routine. In one of the clips on Instagram, we spotted her using sliding discs and reformer machines, tools that focus on slow, controlled movements, breathing techniques, and core strength.
Unlike intense muscle-building workouts, Pilates offers a leaner and more toned body, which is exactly the aesthetic Harnaaz has embraced. It also reduces injury risk and improves posture, making it a popular choice among celebrities.
Harnaaz’s transformation is more than physical, it's emotional, empowering, and incredibly real. From being body-shamed to now breaking the internet, she’s shown that health is personal and healing is powerful.
