The Government of India is planning a proposal to introduce the National Sports Governance Bill, which will be first be put forward in the parliament on Wednesday, July 23. If the bill is accepted, signed, and brought into an enforcement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the richest cricketing body globally, will be bound to comply with the Act.
What is the National Sports Governance Bill? The main purpose of the bill is to maintain, operate and solidify the sporting operations around the country, which will also look at term-wise election of members, making the federations accountable and ensuring welfare for sportspersons in the geographical purview of the nation. The BCCI, thus, will also be required to adhere to the law related thereto, once the bill is passed.
“Like all National federations, the BCCI will have to comply with the law of the land once this bill becomes an act,” a source in a report on NDTV Sports was quoted as saying.
The scope of BCCI in the Indian sporting scene has amplified multifold as cricket has been confirmed to be a part of the Olympics, making its second incarnation during the marquee quadrennial event at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Cricket will be played in T20I mode, the shortest format of the game, and world champions India are almost certain to be one of the contestants three years down the line.
BCCI President Roger Binny's mandatory step-downSpeaking more about the Indian cricket board, its President Roger Binny recently celebrated his 70th birthday, and as a result, became ineligible to hold the position any longer. As a result, the BCCI is on the lookout for a fresh name to take care of things after Binny's departure. In the meantime, it is possible that vice-president Rajeev Shukla will act as the Interim President of the BCCI. More development on the matter is currently awaited.
