The government told the Parliament that every second pensioner gets a monthly pension of less than Rs 1,500 under the Employees' Pension Scheme 1995 (EPS-95) run by EPFO. This information was given by Minister of State for Labor and Employment Shobha Karandlaje. She had shared the data.
Only so many people get a pension of more than 6 thousand
The data till March 31, 2025, shared by Minister of State for Labor and Employment Shobha Karandlaje also revealed that out of 81,48,490 pensioners under the EPS scheme, only 0.65 percent, i.e., 53,541 pensioners, get a monthly pension of more than six thousand rupees.
49,15,416 gets a pension of only Rs 1,500
The minister told the House that the number of pensioners receiving a monthly pension of less than Rs 1,500 was 49,15,416. Thus, almost every second person or more than half of the pensioners were getting a monthly pension of less than Rs 1,500.
80,94,949 got a pension of less than Rs 6 thousand
The number of pensioners getting a monthly pension of less than four thousand rupees was 78,69,560. The number of pensioners getting a pension of less than six thousand rupees per month was 80,94,949.
Pension amount was increased in 2022-23
The minister also informed that the total amount distributed under the pension scheme increased from Rs 22,112.83 crore in 2022-23 to Rs 23,027.93 crore in 2023-24. It is worth noting that the trade unions have demanded an increase the minimum monthly pension to Rs 9,000 under EPS-95. At present, the minimum monthly pension is one thousand rupees.
Will the pension received under EPFO increase?
For a long time, a question has been going on whether the government will take any steps regarding the minimum pension for employees working in the private sector. Recently, there was a discussion that it will be increased to a minimum of Rs 7500. Currently, the minimum pension amount is only Rs 1000.
