Mikel Arteta gives Arsenal transfer update and answers Viktor Gyokeres question

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has kept his cards close to his chest when asked about the potential arrival of Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

The Swedish striker is overwhelmingly fancied to join the Gunners in the transfer window despite suggestions that Manchester United were interested in his services.

After strengthening their midfield, the wing and defence this summer, the only standout position that needs Arsenal need to address is up front.

Last season, Arsenal lost momentum after injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz left them without a recognised centre-forward. Football.london understands the Gunners are determined to address their depth in this position.

However, in his press conference prior to the clash with AC Milan, Arteta refused to share his thoughts on the potential addition of Gyokeres.

"I cannot comment on any player who is not part of our group yet," the Spaniard explained.

"When we have something concrete to offer in any case to any player we will do that." When he was then asked about the general possibility of new faces arriving at the Emirates Stadium, Arteta gave hope to fans who are wanting to see fresh blood come into the squad.

"There’s still a long time in the window and we are seeking still, in terms of numbers, we are short and we have to improve the depth and quality of the squad," he added. "We are constantly looking in the market.

"Until that happens, focus on the players we have and focus on them and I’m very pleased with what I have seen in the last 10-15 days."

Arsenal's first match in their Asian tour kicks off on Wednesday at 12.30pm BST against the Serie A giants.

That will be followed by a clash against Newcastle United in Singapore on Sunday before a trip to Hong Kong to face Tottenham Hotspur for the first time overseas on Thursday, July 31.

"Super excited to be here," Arteta said on touching down in Singapore. "An incredible welcome from our supporters here, they are so passionate.

"And adapting to the context, the weather we were unable to train today. "We have to adapt to those situations too and very excited to have a successful tour."
